 OTHER NEWS

You Can Do It, Yes You Can!

Tables were full Friday night as a mix of people, young and old, gathered at Hurley Church of Christ to learn how to make a birdhouse from a gourd.

Months ago, during a Wednesday night Bible study, a group began to talk about traditions and skills that are being missed by a lot of people today. From there, the idea for community education classes was born. In a relaxed and encouraging Christian atmosphere, they began offering classes on things like crafting, cooking, sewing, gardening and more. "The possibilities are endless," said Rosa Eubanks, one of the organizers of the class. "We are hoping members of the community having a valuable skill will volunteer to teach a class for us."

The classes are open to anybody and are free of charge; however, materials may be required for certain classes. They welcome any ideas and suggestions from the community. During the next class, on Saturday, November 22nd, they will be building gingerbread houses and learning about making wreaths and bows. Each participant will bring home their own gingerbread house. For more information or to register, please call 588-2664 or 588-6870. Registration is required.

How to make a gourd birdhouse:
1) Clean it: Using a bucket of sudsy water with a few drops each of dish washing detergent and bleach. Scrub with scouring pad to remove dirt and mildew. Allow to dry thoroughly. Avoid placing in direct sunlight as this can cause cracking.

2) Using an expansion bit or hole saw, drill a hole slightly above the center in one side of the gourd. Using a spoon scrape out the seeds on the inside or shake over the trash.

3) Drill four or five small holes on the bottom for expansion and ventilation.

4) Sand lightly and, if desired, paint or stain with enamel paint and clear polyurethane.

5) Hang outside and enjoy!
