HORNET SCHOOL NEWS February 23, 2010 Newspapers in Education is here...
"A Fine Fella" coming next week to The Link...
Dear Teachers,
I am excited to announce that next week will mark the start of our official Newspapers in Education (NIE) program. We’ve timed this launch to coincide with Newspapers in Education Week, which will be celebrated in communities across the country from March 1-5.
Studies have shown that using newspapers as teaching tools can play a vital role in helping your students with critical thinking skills, community mindedness and more. While we have been donating 300 papers a week to East Central schools, we’ve been lax in supplying you with the resources to use them effectively in your classrooms. That is a problem I’m hoping to correct with the start of this program.
Every issue of The East Central Link will now include content that can be used in your classroom lesson plans for every grade. This content will include things like monthly writing and photography contests, educational word games, serial stories and more. We will provide each campus with a copy of the “Newspapers in Education Teacher’s Guide”, which is aligned with national learning standards. This guide is full of ideas and activities appropriate for every age group. Click here for a copy of the guide.
This program will allow you to order FREE copies of The East Central Link for use in the classroom. However, in order to secure the funding to make this possible we need to keep an accurate record of the number of classrooms and students participating. Teachers must notify us by phone or e-mail by Friday of each week to request papers for the following Wednesday. If you plan on using papers for educational activities every week, we can set that up with just one phone call. These will now be the only copies delivered to each school.
Next Wednesday we will publish the first of an 8-part historical fiction serialized story entitled “A Fine Fella”. Each week we will print a new chapter of the story to be read to/by your students. A teacher’s guide with lesson plan ideas is available for free download by clicking here. “A Fine Fella” tells how, in his rugged youth, America's most beloved president was molded to guide his country in the dark days of the Civil War. I think you and your students will enjoy the story.
We would love your ideas and suggestions as to how we can make this program better and our coverage more conducive to classroom use. The students sitting in your desks today will be leading this community tomorrow. As the community newspaper, we want to do everything we can help you shape and mold them into the leaders they are meant to be.
The sacrifices you make every day for your students are awesome – and I lift my hat to you.
